About Karlie

Hi, I’m Karlie. I write Indoor Plant Style from a small apartment in Portland, Oregon, where the sky stays gray for a good part of the year and most of my windows don’t get much sun.

I didn’t start with a green thumb. My first plants were impulse buys, and I lost more of them than I’d like to admit, mostly to overwatering and to spots that looked bright to me but weren’t bright enough for them. Each one taught me something.

What I’ve learned the hard way

Most houseplant advice is written for bright homes with big windows and room to spare. Mine has neither. So I learned to read the light in a room instead of trusting the plant tag, to water by touch instead of by the calendar, and to pick plants that fit a shelf, a windowsill or the corner by the bathroom door.

That’s what you’ll find here:

  • Care guides for real conditions: low light, dry winter heat, small rooms.
  • Styling ideas for small spaces, where every plant has to earn its spot.
  • Product guides built from what buyers actually report, the good and the bad.

What I’m not

I’m not a botanist, a horticulturist or a vet, and I don’t have a degree in plant science. Every guide is researched from reliable sources: university extension services, botanical gardens and, for pet safety, the ASPCA. Product guides summarize what buyers report in their reviews.

If a guide doesn’t match what you see at home, trust your plant and your light first. Every apartment is different, and so is every plant.

Say hello

I love hearing about your plants, the ones that thrive and the ones that are struggling. Write to me through the Contact page, or sign up for the Sunday email for one plant idea a week.
